Curriculum

The Alongside Academy’s curriculum coincides with the seasons and describes the narrative of nature. The program is divided into 4 units: summer, fall, winter & spring. Within each unit, we will explore many themes pertaining to farming/gardening, homemaking/handcrafts, and outdoor skills. All lessons and activities foster our vision that students will fall in love with working with their hands - crafting the beautiful out of the ordinary, repairing what is broken, and stewarding things that grow.

Educational Philosophy

We believe in apprentice-style and Authentic Learning because it aligns with and works with humans, who are inherently narrative based and not merely logic based. Although some subjects of learning are best taught in an instructional setting, hand and craft skills are best taught in motion, through direct hands-on application, i.e. brain based teaching, multisensory learning, peer modeling and Authentic Learning.

At Alongside Academy, we believe that learning hand and craft skills is not just about picking up a hobby, but rather acquiring tools that are applicable in all of life. Being practiced in seeing something ordinary and utilizing one’s imagination to craft something beautiful can connect one’s ability to see beauty and problem-solve. Learning how to repair the home with one’s own hands can encourage interdependence between friends and neighbors rather than always outsourcing. Stewarding our resources requires vision and patience. It leads us to experience being connected to what we are doing and into confidence in our ability to accomplish hard things.
